Unity Homes/Healthy Building Network

Unity Homes is a Mississippi based non-profit organization, begun by members of the Healthy Building Network as a response to post-Hurricane Katrina devastation, and as an outgrowth of the GreenRelief Project. With multiple stated goals of producing healthy, high quality, energy efficient, affordable housing while simultaneously stimulating local and regional economic growth and providing long-term job training and employment opportunities, Unity Homes produces factory built housing using local labor and sustainable materials.

Due to Elton + Hampton’s expertise in manufactured housing and knowledge of green affordable housing, we were asked to design and specify green methods for prototypical housing units that can be assembled to match individual owners’ needs. Drawing on our experience creating the “No Vinyl Home” for Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans, we designed a three-bedroom, 1,200 SF shotgun style home as an adaptive prototype, using green materials and reflecting the local vernacular.

Unity Homes’ first prototype house was delivered and erected in January 2007 for the North Gulfport Land Trust. A production facility, in Columbia, Mississippi, is planned to open in mid-2008.
