Lawrence Community Works

Our House for Design and Technology is the flagship project of Lawrence Community Works, a cutting-edge community development corporation with a three-pronged strategy aimed at the physical redevelopment of Lawrence’s low income neighborhoods, the creation of locally available educational opportunities, and the fostering of a robust network of residents involved in community change. In the last five years, Lawrence Community Works has created twenty-five units of housing and two parks.

Our House for Design and Technology occupies a substantially renovated and modernized 11,000 square foot historic brick Catholic school building. The original building was redesigned to serve as a home for educational programs for youth and adults, focusing both on design and technology education/careers for youth, and on basic education for adults. The facility offers classrooms, studios, offices, and community/exhibit space, along with resource rooms for local universities partnering with Lawrence Community Works.

The building and its systems serve as models to educate users about green approaches to construction. The project is built to LEED Gold level standards. It received MTC grant funding for roof-mounted photovoltaics that provide 20% of the building's electrical needs, and is air conditioned through a well water geothermal system.
