Equal Exchange Coffee

Equal Exchange, a worker-owned Fair Trade Organization, was founded in 1986 to create a new approach to trade—one that would engage consumers and build honest and cooperative long-term trade relationships through connection with small-scale farmers and producers of quality foods around the world.

Equal Exchange brings concepts of sustainability and democracy directly into their business model, and sought an Architect with a demonstrated record of similar values and principles. Elton + Hampton Architects participated in group workshops around issues of sustainability, health, and green building, producing a prioritized list of requirements for the new facility, located in a renovated existing warehouse.

Design provides for organization of the large work force into team areas, with large common kitchen and meeting spaces acknowledging the democratic structure and mission of Equal Exchange. The coffee finishing process uses high efficiency roasters, with recirculation and re-use of waste heat generated by the high roasting temperature.
